The overall design is a result of applied challenges through plot boundaries amongst the natural landscape. This tropical modern villa consists of 4 bedrooms and maintains a consistent palette of 100-plus year-old reclaimed teak from Java, reclaimed ironwood from Kalimantan, andesite, terrazzo, local limestone, and floor to ceiling windows. The predominant gesture of the house is it’s polygonal shading element, which introduces a transition space, semi-covered and connecting the indoors with the outdoors.  Various folds in the roof give a sense of protection and privacy, and each bedroom bares it’s own signature as a result of the projects overarching architectural narrative. Cladded with reclaimed teak, the ceiling gives a stark contrast to the lime stone walls that pick up the geometric theme on another scale - a big puzzle of individually cut stone plates that are sourced from a quarry near by.  An expansive garden scape cascades from the angular infinity pool, back dropped by the Indian Ocean. Custom furniture was created to fit into the buildings unique angles. This villa houses a collection of oversized framed art by Andy Davis.  • Lot size – 1,100m2 • Villa size – 275m2      • Pool size – 42m2 Cliff Front 7 (Carbon House) is part of the ‘Uluwatu Surf Villas a resort dedicated to surf and travel culture. House BRAS is located on a lush green site abutting a pond in the middle of an old allotment in the suburbs of Antwerp. The house is designed to blend into its surrounding natural landscape. The meandering plan allows daylight to penetrate during all seasons and at any time of the day while achieving unobstructed views of the garden. The ground floor consists of three main zones – the living area with an open kitchen, an exercise area with a swimming pool and sauna, and an evening zone with bedrooms and a space for music offering a panoramic view of the pond. These zones are physically and visually connected with glazed passages along four closed blocks covered in dark larch veneer leading to ancillary spaces such as stairs, pantry, entrance and bedrooms. On the first floor is a master suite with views of the tree crowns and a library overlooking the pond through the double height music room. Technical spaces and car parks are located underground and are accessible through a ramp that appears to cut through the pond.  Trusses are integrated in the roof slopes, making it possible to realize large column-free cutouts in the natural stone envelope. These openings are finished with aluminum joinery. To emphasize the monolithic character of the house, the 5th façade is also clad with Musschelkalk natural stone slabs. The slabs in 3 different sizes are placed in a directionless Roman pattern so that the roofs and facades fuse together enabling the house to blend into the landscape like a stone in a forest.

This is a house for a couple of French artist (husband) and Japanese wife, who are very interested in aesthetic of Japanese garden, culture and architecture. The house is nestled quietly on the top of hill in Kamakura in Japan, a historic ancient city, and facing to wonderful scenery, overlooking the Shonan coastline and facing Mt. Fuji, a symbol of Japan, in the distance. The clients became interested through Japanese Tea Ceremony and Japanese garden gradually for long time. Finally they decided to move in Japan. This is a place for them to settle and live to the end with their dream. In addition to their comfort in the house, they required a function to invite guests from foreign country and a feast for the eyes through this architecture like guest house. In response to the requests from clients, we defined architectural themes below: -Deal with symbolic and beautiful view and nature as architecture is always response to site. - Japanese modern style that incorporate traditional methods, practices and materials. -Guests can feel aesthetic of Japan through the architecture comfortably. Façade is completely closed design to street side by concrete wall to emphasize privacy, while it is fully opened to the good direction of the landscape as much as possible. The architectural layout and open-close study make it possible to remove disturbing structure from field of view, so that you can focus on the majestic nature and wonderful scenery only. One of Characteristic of Japanese architecture that represents Sukiya building is beauty of continuous eaves. That’s not only design, but also function to cut rain and direct sunlight. We design the traditional continuous eaves in a modern way by making it sharp and thin in details as well as challenging using new material such as steel plate in structure and finish. We also believe that Japanese architecture has been powerfully but delicately designed, taking advantage of the potential of the materials themselves. We avoided, as much as possible, installing industrial finishes represented by recent plastic houses, while using traditional Japanese materials, such as granite, Japanese paper, black plaster, wood lattice and louver for total coordination, so that all the foreigner can feel Japanese features. We hope these hybrids of Japanese modern design make integration with site, nature and deep exchange with people who visit this place.
