ecoLogicStudio has been invited by INL, International Iberian Institute for Nanotechnologies and the City of Braga to rethink the Urban Algae Folly project presented at ExpoMilano2015 this year in Milan (Italy) for Praça da República in Braga (Portugal).
The Urban Algae Folly, designed by ecoLogicStudio, is an interactive pavilion integrating living micro-algal cultures, a built example of architecture’s bio-digital future.
Microalgae, in this instance Chlorella, are exceptional photosynthetic machines; they contain nutrients that are fundamental to the human body, such as minerals and vegetable proteins; microalgae also oxygenate the air and can absorb CO2 from the urban atmosphere ten times more effectively than large trees.
The innovative architecture of the Urban Algae Folly originates from the evolution of the well known ETFE architectural skin system; in this instance it has the ability to provide the ideal habitat both to stimulate Chlorella’s growth and to guarantee visitors interaction. In any given moment the effective translucency, the colour, the reflectivity, the sound and productivity of the Urban Algae Folly are the result of the symbiotic relationship of climate, microalgae, humans and digital control systems.

ecoLogicStudio is an architectural design studio involved in biodigital design and architecture research for the definition of a new “ecology” of space and behaviour. Co-founded in London in 2005 by Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero, the studio has built up an international reputation for its innovative work on ‘systemic’ design, a method defined by the combination and integration of systemic thinking, computational design, bio-hacking and prototyping. This “broadened” approach to design – ranging from the micro to the macro– is embodied into an experimental practice, where projects and installations become laboratories of “interactions”. Completed projects include a public library, private houses, large facades and eco-roofs; ecoLogic has developed prototypes and installations for the most important Architectural Biennales and the recent project “metaFolly” is part of the celebrated permanent collection of the FRAC Center in Orleans. The work of ecoLogicStudio has featured in many international architectural books and magazines like the New Arcadians: emerging UK Architects by Lucy Bullivant and the Metropolis Magazine in NY where ecoLogicStudio was nominated among the 10 most interesting global emergent practices of 2014.
